Spatial analysis of health facility access

Where can rapid diagnosis happen in Guinea? Explore lab capability, geographic access, and sample-transport routes across ~106 facilities surveyed in 2016.

Heatmap methodology presented at ASTMH 2018. Facility locations are real surveyed sites, but survey responses have been fabricated and don’t represent the actual results.

Lab tests often can’t be processed where they’re collected — samples travel up the network from center → prefecture → region → national. These overlays measure how far that journey is for each rapid test, three ways: distance to the nearest capable facility, population × distance (where access burden concentrates), or population beyond a 20 km walkshed.

Why measure? Cold-chain storage has a maximum viable transport time, and rainy-season road washouts can break the network. Route estimates come from Google Maps and may not match ground conditions.

An interactive view over a 2016 LAB-NET survey of ~106 medical facilities in Guinea — sample-transport routes, lab capabilities, and three measures of geographic access by rapid test type.

Facility locations are real surveyed sites. Survey response values shown in this public version have been randomized to protect respondent privacy.
